NASHVILLE — A group of music figures has begun a campaign against mountaintop coal removal.

The campaign, Music Saves Mountains, is sponsored by the Natural Resources Defence Council and the Gibson Foundation. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a senior attorney with the council, addressed those attending a meeting Monday night.

Those at the gathering included Emmylou Harris, Randy Travis, Big Kenny Alphin, Dierks Bentley, Delbert McClinton, Kid Rock and J.D. Souther.

Harris said protection is needed for the Appalachian mountains, where country music was born and is celebrated in song.

Dear Mr Davis,

Kid Rock would be the last person in the world to prevent hard working people from making a living. If you believe that, You dont know him very well.

There has to be a happy solution to both sides. Coal mining can be very destructive if not planned out and controlled. Power companies will look to make a buck rather than look to preserve and restore the beauty that they destroy. Both sides can be successful if someone is watching over the greedy.......

I am most definitely not a treehugger. I work for Conoco Phillips. And I know how greed can get in the way of preserving nature. Both sides can win. Really.......
Nicely put Angel! I agree overall.

I can more than understand the upset and anger of Mr. Davis, however. Regulated more than they already are, many miners will lose their jobs, and will have no education or experience to obtain other employment or careers. It's only natural for Mr. Davis to be uspet and angry at those who could possibly make a difference in whether or not he's able to feed his family. The Appalachian Mountain people struggle to survive as it is, very poor communities and area of the US. Reflect upon the childhood stories of Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn...not much has changed for the Appalachian Mountain people since those childhoods.

Power companies will be forced to look for alternatives as well, to replace what is lost. America is in an Electrical Crisis, of which many are not aware just how serious it is. Many larger cities are already rationed with electricity use. The Power Companies can not keep up with demand at all, and government regluations becoming more and more restrictive relating to our environment, are very expensive for the Power Companies to abide by, of which they of course pass those costs on to the consumers, who already struggle to pay ever increasing electric bills.

All that said, on the flip side I'm also someone concerned over the amount of coal we are removing from Earths core, leaving it hollow. I live near two major Coal Burning Power Plants...and it is scary as hell to watch the 100 long train cars filled with coal traveling to those nearby plants...one after another several times daily. Removing that much coal can't be good for Earths core, it just can't be.

No doubt this is a double edged sword situation, damned if you do, damned if you don't. Also, I too am a bit surprised that Kid Rock has involved himself publicly with such a controversial and political issue, of which along these lines are typically supported by strong Liberals and tree hugger type personalities, of which Emmylou has been known to be...and usually they are exaggerated causes. It's a bit out of character for him...unless he has inner hidden future political desires. Who knows, maybe he does, haha.

Bio piece on Emmylou:

A longtime social activist, Harris has lent her voice to many causes. She is active in cultural preservation issues, notably the Country Music Foundation and the Grand Ole Opry. As an animal rights activist and the owner of several dogs and cats, Emmylou also supports PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and the Humane Society. Since 1997 she has been the most visible spokesperson for the Campaign for a Landmine Free World, drawing public attention and notable musical artists to the cause.
The journalist who wrote that needs to go back to school, or be fired, hahaha. I'm normally not critical of such, with exception of those who are paid to be professionals and the errors are multiple, haha.

It should have been, 'have' in the first sentence, not "has"...and they misspelled 'defense' as 'defence', lol. Mountains should've been capitalized when used in a title/name, such as "Appalachian Mountains"...and the same is true for "Country Music", as well as both 'the's' included in title/name...'The Gibson Foundation'....'The Natural Resources Defense Council'. Emmylou's comment should have been quoted, Harris said, "protection is needed for the Appalachian Mountains, where Country Music was born and is celebrated in song."
The more I think about this...the more something just seems 'off' that Kid Rock involved himself in this, and with this particular group of artists...many of which I know to be a bit radical Liberal & tree hugger types. That just doesn't fit Kid's personality at all...and he has made it clear many times he doesn't become involved in this type of controversial political issue.

Oh boy...don't like where my thoughts are going with this at all. This is another Emmylou cause, and she is considered by most within the Country Music Industry, to be the most influential woman in the industry, as well as, influential related to the Grammy politics that occur.
holy lack of punctuation batman.
Maybe a friend invited him and he's just observing, I don't know, it's just a thought maybe.
reminnds me of that song
hes an ole hippie and he dont know what to do
Hi Connie Jo- hope you're well :)

You don't have to be a liberal or treehugger to want to help find a better way to treat our earth...
if you people got up every morning and went to work not knowing weather or not a bunch of treehuggers where gona stop you from feeding your family and stop your way of life you would see why im mad about one of my favorite musicians taking sides with these low life people i want to beleive that mabey he will stop and think about what hes about to do of all things the american badass has become a treehugger i hope not
No, no you don't DRG, I agree wholeheartedly. However, some among the particular group in question are known to be just that...not labeled so by me, but by majority of a biographers, industry peers, political groups, locals, etc.

Regardless...this still doesn't sound like Kid Rock IMO, nor are there any among the group Kid has publicly been known to socialize with, or be connected to. My gut is telling me there is more to this than meets the eye. Maybe AnnieBo is correct, maybe he just happened to be tagging along, or someone asked him along to consider the situation in hopes he would support.

The miners we're talking about here are known to be some of the most loyal hard working, personal sacrificing, Patriotic, and God fearing family oriented people in the US...yet underpaid considering many health risk factors. America relies upon the coal miners & takes their sacrfices for granted daily. Bet not many think to thank the coal miners of America when they're running their blow dryers, doing their laundry, grabbing a cold beer from the fridge, connecting to friends on the internet, cranking up KR on the stereo....or attending a KR concert.

I just can't see Kid taking a stand that could potentially cause these people to lose jobs...regardless.

I don't want to see our Earth harmed either, but then again...my heart goes out to the miners & their families. They won't be able to find jobs easily if they lose their mining jobs...it's all they know, and pretty much all they have.

Truth be told...the vast majority of Americans are glutons when it comes to electrical usage just as they are with fuel usage, and pretty much everything else...we're a very spoiled society in many ways by comparison to most. We will put our comfort & convenience over conserving for our Earth.

The true honorable solution is for American consumers to cut back their electrical usage and not be so wasteful & spoiled...then we won't need to mine as much coal. What ya wanna bet most of, if not all of those artists mentioned...don't think twice about their own electrical usage & waste?
